Hip pain Treatment – Warwick & Leamington Spa
Hip pain means different things to different people. It describes pain anywhere from the outer lower back and buttocks, thigh, pelvis and groin. It can arise from a range of conditions, some of which do not actually involve the hip joint itself. These include:
- Hip osteoarthritis
- Muscle tightness, strain or imbalance (often including the iliopsoas, glutes or piriformis muscles)
- Hamstring or gluteal tendinopathy
- Trochanteric bursitis
- Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
- Referred pain from lower back or sacro-iliac joints
- Ligament sprain
- Labral tear or hip impingement
- Trapped or pinched nerve
How can Osteopathic Treatment help your Hip Pain?
Osteopathic hip treatment will aim to reduce your pain, improve movement patterns and encourage self-management. Treatment may include soft tissue massage, mobilisation and strengthening work to the hip and back. An osteopath will also give you advice on lifestyle and exercises to do at home. When is Osteopathic Treatment not Appropriate for Hip Pain?
Most hip pain can be treated effectively with osteopathy. However, sometimes an osteopath may need to refer you to your GP for further tests or scans. This could be because your symptoms suggest other causes of hip pain requiring medical intervention such as:
- Fracture
- Torn ligaments or meniscus
- Inflammatory conditions such as Polymyalgia Rheumatica or Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Referred pain to the hip from internal pelvic or abdominal organs
- Hip dysplasia
